Last week I was at the Apple Distinguished Educator Asia-Pacific institute in Bali. It was great to return as an alumni, and being able to meet the 250 outstanding educators from the class of 2013. I am especially proud of our group from Korea (see below). We may have been the smallest group, but we made our presence known.
I was fortunate enough to be asked to present an “ADE Showcase,” which is a TED style talk given to the entire group of over 300 of the best educators in the world. This was my first time giving this type of talk, and the preparation was quite stressful. (Just ask anyone who was around me in the week leading up to my talk.) Joseph Fambro was kind enough to film & post the talk for me. Take a look if you dare. I have yet to watch it.

ADE Showcase
I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to attend an all day Alan November seminar last Saturday at Taejon Christian International School. Below are my notes from the seminar. If you would like to read a great reflection about the seminar, please take a look at Tim Bray’s post.
3 Motivations for learning: Purpose, autonomy, mastery
Rewards & Motivation by Dan Pink
Validating information is more important than accepting what the teacher said as being correct.
Have the teacher go in with 2 hypothesis & have students figure out which one is true.
Asking questions is more important than getting answers.
Assign 2 students each day to be the official researchers. Any questions, they find the answers. Teacher stops providing answers, kids learn how to research.
Give kids a global audience.
Unlearning is more difficult than learning something new.
It is difficult to unlearn something in order to teach the truth.
How can you introduce anonymity to increase student participation?
Most of the time a misconception trumps good teaching.

Thank you Joseph Fambro for your work putting this together, and for inviting me.
Pro HDR
A couple of weeks ago at the Learning 2.0 conference I went to an iPod photography workshop by Dave Caleb. This was an outstanding session, and I came away with ideas for being a better photographer, and new apps for my iPod. My favorite app from the workshop is Pro HDR. When there is mixed light in a scene, Pro HDR will take two photos, with different exposure for the amounts of light. Then it combines the photos. The photos below were taken this past weekend during my neighborhood photo safari with my wife.
See more examples of what Pro HDR can do for your photos. This is a great app, and really worth the $1.99.

Thanks ISTE
I just wanted to take the time to that the ISTE 2012 organizers for doing something I haven’t seen yet at a conference. They allowed non-paying attendees to visit the exhibit hall. My kids spent several hours in the hall and left with big smiles on their faces, and lots of fun freebies. Thank you ISTE!
The BrainHoney Bee was totally checking out my wife.
